History
The Mom-ME! Fitness Club was founded by a group of mothers in Elk Grove in 2008. With the support of First 5 Sacramento Commission, she was able to create not only this website, but also a community of health-conscious mothers who are united towards a fit cause to bridge relationships in our community.
Our Mom-ME! Fitness Club’s goal is to create a group of families unified towards a common desire to be fit, healthy and happy. Not only will they unite because of a common desire, but they will also build on the friendships created and spirit of the group. There are a lot of young families in our communities and we are interested in connecting with other families with similar interests.
Even though many of us have lived in our home for years, we still don’t know many of our neighbors by name. There are many new neighbors as well as those who have left – transitions seem to happen often in our city. We often take our dogs for a walk and our kids to the park, but we rarely speak at length with dog walkers and other parents. The park should feel like community area that all of us feel we are a part of, almost like a family room in our community.
Some of the key things we want to promote with kids 0-5 years old are:
- The importance of movement and activity
- Friendship and trust between neighborhood kids
- Seeking a positive, healthy role model in their parent
- Knowing more adults in the neighborhood that they can trust and rely on.
Some our our activities will include:
- “Mom-m(e!) Fitness” fitness group 3x/week m/w/sat. We hope to engage the group by meeting on a regular basis connect through active, challenging and fun activities.
- Park Birthday Parties for (1-5 year olds). This activity will not only celebrate the children’s birthday’s this year, but it will invite new children to come and celebrate. This is a great marketing tool to place on flyers and posters around the neighborhood.
- Playtime at the Park (to encourage fitness interaction and activity) after the mother’s workout. We hope this activity will connect the child and the mother in a fun and interactive way. Through playing, running and jumping, we hope to create healthy and fun memories for both the child and mother.
- We hope to see parents being healthy role models for their children. We would also like to see our public areas utilized and being cared for. Young children are our community’s future, and it’s so important that parents are involved in connecting children and creating relationships with their parents. Most of all, we want to instill healthy and active habits for kids while they are young. Our goal is to create a place where you know your neighbors and feel connected through our similarities versus divided in our differences. What better way to connect a community than children?
What is First 5 Sacramento?
The First 5 Sacramento Commission is committed to supporting the healthy development of children zero to age five, the empowerment of families and the strengthening of communities.
During the past fiscal year, over $70 million in Proposition 10 taxes were collected. A portion of this tax revenue is allocated to each county based on the number of live births recorded in that county. Sacramento County received $17 million in Proposition 10 funds for the past fiscal year. In the future, Proposition 10 tax revenue is expected to decline annually consistent with the anticipated decline in the number of smokers.
Research shows that the brain develops dramatically during the first five years and what parents do during these years to support their child’s growth will have a meaningful impact throughout life. First 5 Sacramento wants to give parents and caregivers the tools necessary to ensure their children reach their greatest potential. More about Proposition 10.
First 5 Sacramento continues to work toward providing meaningful experiences to young children during the first five years. We know that positive family interactions during this time have a profound effect on the way children grow and develop and establishing a foundation for future success in school and in life is our goal.
In November 1998, California voters passed Proposition 10, the California Children and Families Act (The Act). This Act imposed a tax on all tobacco products, including cigarettes to fund education, health, childcare and other programs for expectant parents and children ages zero to five. First 5 Sacramento was formed as a result of the passage of Proposition 10 to facilitate funding of children’s programs and services in Sacramento County.
